Authorities in Westport have announced the funeral arrangements for former police chief Alfred R. Fiore, who died last week.
A public visitation will be held on Thursday, Dec. 11, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Harding Funeral Home, 210 Post Road East in Westport. A funeral mass is set for 11 a.m.Friday at Assumption Church, 98 Riverside Avenue.
A police motorcade will gather at 10:30 a.m. Friday and travel south on Imperial Avenue, west on Jesup Road and Post Road East, and west on Riverside Avenue.
Westport police announced Fiore's death over the weekend.
"Chief Fiore will always be remembered fondly for his dedication to duty and unwavering support of the men and women of the Westport Police Department as well as the community he so fondly called his home," the department said in a statement Saturday. "Many of the officers hired during his tenure as Chief still serve Westport today in various roles, and we will remain forever grateful for his leadership, his example, and his guidance."
A Shelton native, Fiore joined the Westport Police Department in July 1978. During his 33 years on the force, he worked as an officer, sergeant, detective, deputy chief, and was appointed police chief on Jan. 1, 2004. He retired in 2010 but continued on a contractual basis for another year.
Westport police said Fiore knew he wanted to serve in law enforcement while in high school. He graduated from the University of New Haven with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and attended the FBI's National Academy for Law Enforcement Leaders in 1988, Westport police said.
Fiore's family did not release a cause of death.
