A home health aide is accused of injuring a 96-year-old woman on Long Island and then failing to seek medical help.
Nassau County Police responded to a Lawrence residence around 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, when a nighttime aide arrived at the victim’s home and noticed a fresh laceration on the woman, who was also complaining of severe leg pain.
The aide contacted the victim’s legal guardian and called 911. Responding officers took the woman to a local hospital, where doctors found she had a broken femur, police said.
The legal guardian reviewed interior home-camera footage and saw the victim fall. The footage then showed the daytime aide grab the woman’s leg and shake it aggressively, causing “extreme pain,” police said. Investigators said the aide did not call 911 or seek any medical attention for the victim.
Officers arrested Marie Byron, 65, of Jamaica, without incident.
Byron is charged with endangering the welfare of an elderly, incompetent, or physically disabled person. She was scheduled for arraignment Monday, Dec. 8, at First District Court in Hempstead.
