Albuquerque voters will choose the city’s next mayor in a runoff election Tuesday, marking the end of a race that has grown contentious in recent weeks as candidates tussle over the issues of crime and homelessness.

Mayor Tim Keller is seeking a third term, while challenger Darren White, a former Bernalillo County sheriff, hopes to oust Keller and build a “tough-on-crime” administration.

Races for two City Council seats — one each in Districts 1 and 3 — will also be settled during the runoff.

One image has stood out to many as a highlight — or lowlight — of the race: scores of apparently unhoused people in Albuquerque’s International District wearing yellow sweatshirts with “I [heart] Tim Keller” emblazoned on the front.
