CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) board members are scheduled to vote Tuesday evening on a major consolidation plan for the district.

The Building Brighter Futures imitative proposes:

16 fewer K-8 schools

13 fewer high schools

CMSD CEO Dr. Warren Morgan said the plan could save the schools $30 million a year.

The plan also promises that high schools will offer more career pathways, and college preparatory classes for students, while the middle school will offer sports and activities to some students who went to schools where the number of students was too low to offer extras like sports.

Twenty years ago the Cleveland Schools had 70,000 students, but enrollment has declined by 50% since 2004, to just about 34,000 students or scholars, according to
