WASHINGTON, D.C. (KALB) - Republican Senators John Kennedy of Louisiana and John Cornyn of Texas have reintroduced the Back the Blue Act in the U.S. Senate , legislation designed to provide additional protections for law enforcement officers.
The bill adds penalties for killing or attempting to conspire to kill current or former United States judges, federal law enforcement officers, or federally-funded public safety officers engaged in official duties.
Another section of the legislation would strengthen self-defense rights for officers by allowing qualified personnel to carry firearms into certain federal facilities and jurisdictions where they are otherwise prohibited.
Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana said there should be special penalties for those who target law enforcement.
