KALKASKA — A family in Kalkaska is in mourning today, remembering two lives lost after three people fell into the ice at Island Lake on Saturday.
Johnathan Brake dove into the water to try and save his teenage brother, James, but the ice kept cracking, according to the one surviving teen, a friend of James’, who managed to climb out shortly before hypothermia set in.
Johnathan is survived by two children; he was waiting for Christmas to tell his parents about a third on the way.
His parents say he was a hero who would have done anything to save his brother.
“I was proud of them, said their father, William Break. ”I’m still proud of them. I’m damn proud of John; he wasn’t going to leave his brother behind.”
They are remembering their sons and offering a warning they have for others.
