FORT WORTH, Texas — More than 40 people are displaced after a fire at an apartment complex on the far east side of the city, officials said.

Firefighters responded Wednesday morning to a fire at the Hillcrest Apartments in the 13000 block of Gazebo Lane, following the call reporting it shortly after 8 a.m., Fort Worth Fire Department officials said.

Fire crews called for a second alarm about five minutes after arriving on scene, and then about nine minutes later, a third alarm was called by the Incident Commander.

"Ensuring that there were enough crews on scene to assist with evacuations, potential injuries, and the possibility of the fire spreading due to the wind was key to the Incident Commander decision-making," the department said in a statement.
