HENDERSONVILLE – On a recent bright, chilly December day, Eileen Young pointed out where sections of the road outside her home that slid down the mountain.
Slabs of asphalt, their yellow center lines still visible, can be seen below among many fallen trees and piles of mud and debris.
Young, 72, a nurse, lives off Davis Mountain Road, walking distance from where it’s barricaded.
After the devastating and deadly floodwaters from Tropical Storm Helene in September 2024, there are two ways in now. One is down Brightwater Drive, a steep, single-lane gravel road where it’s difficult for two cars to pass.
The other is down Davis Mountain Road in the other direction, to Hebron Road, which adds a lot of distance.
