"When life gives you lemons, make lemonade."
So our mothers told us. Wrongly, it turns out. Today, the phrase would better be rendered: "When life gives you citric acid, make acid-ade."
Citric acid, or tartaric acid, is what many of the store-bought lemonade drink mixes are made of. But it's worth it, said Toby Sonneman, author of "Lemon: A Global History," to whip up the real thing.
"Lemons are not expensive, and you can make the beverage to accommodate your own taste for a balance of sweet and tart,"
