ANN ARBOR, MI - City crews responding to a basement sewer backup in the Water Hill neighborhood on Tuesday discovered an unrelated sewage spill that released approximately 120 gallons into the city’s storm drain system.
The city received the initial report of a basement backup on the afternoon of Dec. 9, city officials said in a release.
During their investigation, crews identified a separate problem nearby when they found a utility cover surcharging, causing sewage to rise to the surface and escape from beneath the cover, officials said.
The sewage flowed from the cover into a street gutter before entering the nearest storm drain. City officials said there is no indication the surcharge at the utility cover caused the originally reported basement backup, though the two events occurred
