Nearly 4 in 10 Black grandparents in New Jersey who lived with their grandchildren were responsible for them, according to the latest Census figures.

Some 186,665 grandparents were living with their grandchildren statewide, including 33,410 Black grandparents.

Of those Black grandparents in New Jersey, about 12,015, or nearly 36% were responsible for grandchildren who were under 18 years old. That placed New Jersey 14th among states for the percentage of Black grandparents who live with grandchildren they are raising.

Kansas, Arkansas and Oklahoma had the highest percentages of Black grandparents living with and responsible for their grandchildren. Massachusetts, Arizona and Washington had among the lowest.
