One of UPMC’s most prominent physicians is no longer employed by the medical center or the University of Pittsburgh.

Robert Friedlander was the chair of Pitt’s department of neurological surgery and the Walter E. Dandy distinguished professor of neurosurgery, neurology and neurobiology. He was also co-chair of the UPMC Neurological Institute.

“Dr. Robert Friedlander has stepped down as Chair of the Department of Neurological Surgery and is no longer affiliated with UPMC or the University of Pittsburgh,” UPMC said in an emailed statement. “Dr. Edith Tzeng will serve as the interim chair of the department.”

Dr. Friedlander came to Pittsburgh in 2010 after graduating from Harvard Medical School and completing his residency and fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. Born in Venezuela
