The recall campaign that first looked like a flashy political stunt has quickly become a serious problem for the UCP.
Thursday morning, Elections Alberta approved a recall petition against Premier Danielle Smith . She joins 19 other UCP MLAs targeted by signature drives that could force special riding elections.
At first it was hard to imagine any UCP MLA facing such an election and potentially being forced out of office, at least in rural Alberta.
But the movement has grown with unexpected power. It is possible that local organizers will collect enough signatures to force elections in some ridings.
Riding-wide recall votes would be something entirely new in Alberta. Back in 1937, Social Credit Premier William Aberhart escaped recall by changing his own law.
