LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Three candidates are vying for Jefferson County Clerk David Yates’ old State Senate seat, and on Thursday, residents in District 37 will be able to start early voting.

The three candidates running for this special election are Calvin Leach, who is running as a Republican, Gary Clemons, who is running as a Democrat, and Wendy Higdon, who is running as a Libertarian.

For all three, this would be their first time in an elected office.

WAVE sat down with each one of them to learn about some of their priorities.

David Yates represented Kentucky’s 37th Senate district for a little more than four years. In 2024, he was re-elected with about 60 percent of the vote against Calvin Leach, who is running again.
