Ruth Blenkinsop Evans: Activist. Gardener. Feminist theologian. Matriarch. Born Oct. 15, 1930. in Warwick, U.K.; died Aug. 15, 2025, in Toronto, of congestive heart failure; aged 94.
Christened Sybil Ruth Blenkinsop, she was known all her life as “Stumpy” by her English family, a childhood nickname that stuck. She and her beloved twin brother Dick were the sixth and seventh of eight siblings. Away from her family she was known as Ruth, but she always loved best being called Stumpy. At Oxford University she met Canadian Don Evans. They married in 1952 in England and she followed him to Canada. She and Don raised four sons: Steve, Greg, Luke and Nick before the marriage ended in 1977.
Ruth did her best to create in Canada what she’d known in England; an affectionate family,
