The first accumulating snow of the season is on the way for the tristate region, with the National Weather Service releasing new snowfall projections as a winter storm targets the area Saturday night, Dec. 13, into late Sunday morning, Dec. 14.
According to the latest NWS forecast released early Saturday morning, most of the region can expect 2 to 4 inches of snow, with the highest totals focused on Long Island and southeastern Connecticut.
The new snowfall map shows 3.7 inches forecast for Syosset, 4.1 inches for Islip, 4.3 inches for Montauk, and up to 4.8 inches for Westhampton. Suffolk County could see up to 5 inches in some spots.
New York City, Newark, and much of northern New Jersey are projected to see around 2.8 to 3 inches, while White Plains, Bridgeport, and New Haven are in the 2 to 2.6 inch range. Lighter amounts, generally around 1 to 2 inches, are forecast for the Hudson Valley and inland Connecticut, with Middletown expected to see less than an inch.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory from 10 p.m. Saturday through 1 p.m. Sunday. Forecasters warn of hazardous travel from snow-covered roads after 9 p.m. Saturday night through Sunday morning, with snowfall rates possibly reaching up to half an inch per hour between midnight and 9 a.m.
The storm is part of a fast-moving pattern of Alberta clippers sweeping from the Midwest to the Atlantic, delivering the first widespread snow event of the season for millions. Snow is expected to taper off by midday Sunday, with colder, blustery conditions settling in behind the system.
Travelers and commuters are urged to monitor forecasts and prepare for delays as the region braces for its first real taste of winter.
