KALAMAZOO, MI — It’s not often a business changes its name in year one.
Usually, fledgling business owners are too busy building a brand around their chosen name, focusing on overhead and creating a following.
But for café owners Yazmine Vargas Root and her husband Tyler Root — who opened Matchacita at 120 W. South St. on Dec. 13, 2024 — there wasn’t much of a choice.
In late August, the couple received a cease-and-desist order, giving them an unexpected pause. A business out of Chicago, with the similar name of Matcha Cita, sent them legal notice telling them they had 10 days to change their name.
