The drink-driving threshold in England and Wales could be slashed as part of sweeping Government proposals to enhance road safety. Ministers are preparing a comprehensive new strategy for the autumn, which could represent the most significant overhaul of motoring legislation since the Road Safety Act in 2006.

The recommendations include reducing the drink-drive limit from 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath to 22 micrograms, bringing it in line with Scotland's current standard. Additional measures being examined include mandatory eyesight tests for motorists over 70, stricter sanctions for drivers whose passengers don't buckle up, and a clampdown on uninsured motorists and "ghost plates" that evade camera detection.
