GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - Doctors are urging parents to take another look at their kids’ backpacks as school begins -- or more precisely, look at how their child is using it.

Kids always love to pick out trendy backpacks or maybe one with their favorite character on it, but it’s important to make sure they get one that fits them properly.

Having a backpack that fits properly and isn’t too heavy prevents developing back, neck and upper shoulder pain.

Experts at the National Safety Council say a backpack should not be wider than a child’s torso or hang lower than 4 inches below their waist.

It’s also important to not pack them too full. Kids are walking longer distances and sometimes using their lockers less frequently.
