VANDERBURGH COUNTY, Ind. (WEVV) — Regene Newman of Evansville has been sentenced to 1.5 years in federal prison for wire fraud.

Newman, 59, pleaded guilty to stealing over $125,000 from public funds intended for community programs and nonprofits.

She has already paid $101,133.55 in restitution to two victims and settled with a third.

From 2015 to June 2021, Newman served as Director of Finance for the Vanderburgh County Prosecutor’s Office. During this time, she made unauthorized purchases totaling more than $86,000 using office and nonprofit credit cards.

In June 2021, Newman became Business Director for Vanderburgh County Community Corrections. There, she continued her fraudulent activities, making over $34,000 in unauthorized purchases.
