EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEVV) — Five people were arrested on September 2nd after being discovered in an Evansville sewer stealing copper wiring belonging to CenterPoint Energy.

According to Evansville Police, officers were called to a manhole in front of a home along North Evans Avenue Tuesday afternoon after a caller told dispatch they saw people near the open manhole.

When officers were arriving, they saw one person pulling a large piece of copper wiring out of the manhole. None of the five people, four males and one female, were wearing any clothing to show they belong to a utility company.

City of Evansville was called to the scene and workers removed damaged copper wire from inside a black milk crate located in the sewer, as well as tools including a small handsaw and a few blades. The
