TEMPE, AZ (AZFamily) — An about-face in Tempe this week after city leaders backpedaled on a controversial parks and events ordinance .

It passed unanimously in July and was then rescinded at Tuesday’s city council meeting .

“That item passes 6-0,” said Tempe Mayor Corey Woods during the meeting. “So that ordinance is now rescinded.”

Advocates who have been pushing for this said this proves the power of the people.

A petition and hours of public comment during City Council meetings appear to have influenced elected officials to change their minds, but the battle over how to handle gatherings in Tempe parks is far from over.

“We had a really tough decision that we had to make and we had to move very quickly,” said Woods.
