ATLANTIC BEACH, N.C. (WITN) - People are being asked to avoid swimming along a section of beach in Carteret County as officials work on a possible hazmat situation.
The Town of Atlantic Beach says its fire department is working with the U.S. Coast Guard, Carteret County Emergency Services and Carteret County fire marshal to investigate a potential hazmat situation. It says a substance is in the water between the Oceanana and Circle beach access point and slowly moving west.
There’s a swimming advisory in place along the entire beach strand as officials work to figure out what the substance is, according to the town. Swimmers are asked avoid entering the water until officials give the OK.
