NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Hampton & Peninsula Health Districts are asking for the public’s help in locating a large gray pit bull that bit a person in the Carlson Fall Housing Project area of Lee Hall on Thursday.

Officials said if the dog is not found, the victim may need to undergo post-exposure treatment to prevent rabies. If located, the dog will not be taken from its owner but will be placed on a 10-day in-home confinement period for observation.

"It's a series of four given in the arm and there will be a rabies immunoglobulin that is given at the wound site for Day zero, day three, day seven, and day 14," said Jayme Humphrey, an Environmental Health Supervisor.

Humphrey said once a person exhibits symptoms, it is already too late, as rabies is nearly 100% fatal.
