A Midlands holidaymaker narrowly escaped permanent paralysis following a devastating accident during what was supposed to be the trip of a lifetime in America. John Boyles, aged 67, sustained severe spinal cord injuries after tumbling at a Nascar circuit in Indianapolis last July.

Swift emergency intervention prevented complete paralysis from the neck downwards, though he endured lengthy hospital stays both in the United States and upon his return to Britain. The incident has also resulted in the permanent loss of function in his middle, ring, and little fingers on both hands.
