WASHINGTON, D.C. (KUMV) - The Washington Commanders hosted the New York Giants at the nation’s capital Sunday. While the Commanders play on the east coast, the team’s history has a connection to Montana.
The old logo is inspired by Blackie Wetzel, a member of the Blackfeet Indian Tribe and is modeled after several of their leaders. Senator Steve Daines has been making efforts to see the logo return on legacy merchandise and even throwbacks.
“We hope to see the NFL come to an agreement with Indian country. They’re proud of this logo; it’s a symbol of strength and of pride and has deep Montana connections,” said Daines.
Daines says his priority is the logo and not the name. President Donald Trump has called on the team to revert back to the Redskins moniker.
