A man accused of murdering an Ipswich couple told family members he was "hearing voices" in the months before the alleged attack, a Queensland court has heard.

Lars Faleata was arrested and charged with the murders of Christine and Joe Stephan, who were found dead after a fire in their Collingwood Park home, south-west of Brisbane, on January 23, 2022.

He was also charged with arson and unlawfully driving a motor vehicle that belonged to Mr Stephan.

During a committal hearing in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday, the cousin of Mr Faleata, Ledon Faleata, told the court he had a "good brotherly relationship" with the accused until 2021, when he abruptly stopped communicating with the family.
