Rick Davies, the co-founder and lead singer of Supertramp who helped craft some of rock’s most memorable hits, died Saturday in East Hampton, N.Y. at age 81.

According to a statement posted to the band’s website , Davies battled Multiple Myeloma, a form of blood cancer, for over 10 years.

Davies, known for his distinctive vocals and Wurlitzer piano playing, formed Supertramp with Roger Hodgson in London in 1969. Together, they honed the band’s signature progressive-pop sound, with Davies serving as both vocalist and pianist on hits including “Give a Little Bit,” “Take the Long Way Home” and “Goodbye Stranger.”
