BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- A Jefferson County judge ordered Monday the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency to turn over body camera footage of the police shooting that killed Jabari Peoples.
Jefferson County District Attorney Danny Carr ruled in August the shooting, which happened June 23, was justified. Now, the Peoples family is taking the case to civil court.
So far, a lawsuit has not been filed, but a Rule 27 petition to preserve evidence has.
Attorney Leroy Maxwell, who is representing the Peoples family, said in court the video the family was shown in August was edited. Maxwell also said Carr's statements to reporters lead him to believe a longer version of the body camera footage exists, and the family has not been able to see it.
