MOUNTAIN BROOK, Ala (WIAT) -- Nightly lane closures are underway for the part of Highway 280 near The Summit.

The right lanes on Highway 280 eastbound and westbound starting at Shades Creek Parkway to I-459 will close from 7 p.m. and reopen at 6 a.m. until Friday. The road work is to add a fourth lane to one of the Birmingham area's busiest roadways.

The construction is a part a larger Alabama Department of Transportation project for Jefferson County that costs over $52 million.

If you’re familiar with Highway 280, you know it’s a popular place to shop and eat. The major highway attracts locals and people from nearby counties. For much of the day, traffic is heavy, especially when people are going to and from work.

“I don’t even know what would make this better,” Noah Williams said.
