None of us, the media in the press box and the fans in the stands, had any idea what we were looking at down on the field following the second-half kickoff of the season opener against the Broncos.
Obviously, Kevin Everett was seriously hurt after he smashed his helmet into the thigh of Denver return man Domenik Hixon, and there was a funereal silence that engulfed the stadium when the ambulance pulled onto the field and whisked Everett to a local hospital.
With the level of care he received across nearly 15 minutes when everything stood still, we all figured he had suffered a neck or spinal injury, and that was scary enough. It wasn’t until the next day that we learned the depth of what happened.
Indeed he had suffered a fracture of the C3-4
