Barrington Police Chief Michael Correia is planning to meet with a local legislator to discuss electric scooters. He said that while state law restricts the use of electric bicycles by children under the age of 16, it appears to ignore operation of electric scooters by juveniles.

“We may need a local ordinance or a state ordinance,” Chief Correia said. “It’s going to take a little more research.”

In July, the Barrington Police Department announced an enforcement effort aimed at addressing the illegal operation of electric bikes. Police said state law restricts anyone under 16 from riding an electric bike.
