A person shot at Boston police officers in Roxbury early Friday morning, hitting an officer in the arm, Police Commissioner Michael Cox said during a press conference at the scene.

Officers returned fire, hitting the suspect multiple times, he added.

The incident began at around 12:45 a.m. Friday, when officers went to the area of Dudley and Washington streets. There, they saw a “group of individuals,” Cox said, according to audio provided by the department. As officers began investigating the group, one of the individuals ran from the scene, prompting a pursuit.

The suspect ran around the corner onto Kenilworth Street, where they fired at officers rounding the corner. Police returned fire, hitting the suspect multiple times. The extent of the suspect’s injuries was not immediately clea
