As Indiana Rail Safety Week begins, officials are highlighting the important of making safe choices around trains and railroad tracks.

Every year, 2,100 North Americans are killed or seriously injured when they engage in unsafe behavior around tracks and trains. Indiana Operation Lifesaver is joining officials and state Operation Lifesaver programs across the nation this week to observe Rail Safety Week and encourage the public to help #STOPTrackTragedies, according to a news release.

The week is also being simultaneously observed in Canada in Mexico.

In Indiana, more than 100 people are killed in grade crossing and trespassing incidents each year, the news release says.
