CANTON, New York (WWNY) - A tax break could be coming to some residents in the village of Canton, but those who qualify may not want to take it.
A state law allows municipalities to provide up to a 10 percent tax break on property taxes for volunteer first responders.
“It’s something I think we feel we need to do,” said Canton Mayor Michael Dalton.
The village of Canton is considering it. If so, they join a handful of municipalities in the county that have already done so, including the town of Canton last month and, most recently, St. Lawrence County at Monday’s full board meeting. The change will go into effect in 2026.
The goal of the tax break is to recruit or retain volunteers.
