BEAUFORT, N.C. (WITN) - A man who prosecutors say cut off his ankle monitor and threw it in the ocean while out on bond was convicted of kidnapping after a three-day trial.

The Carteret County District Attorney’s Office says Jason McCarvill was convicted of second-degree kidnapping, habitual misdemeanor assault, and assault with a deadly weapon.

The 39-year-old Newport man was sentenced to serve between three years, seven months and five years, three months in state prison.

Prosecutors say McCarvill was dating his victim back in January. They say while in his vehicle in Newport, the man repeatedly hit the victim in the face, then used a pocketknife with a razor blade to keep her in the car so he could terrorize her.

McCarvill was released on bond some four months after his arrest, and
