WILMINGTON, N.C. — Students and parents at UNC Wilmington say they’re still shaken after reports of an armed person sent the campus into lockdown this week — reports investigators later determined were a false alarm.

Greensboro mom Jennifer Jones told WFMY News 2 she spent hours on the phone with her son, who sheltered in his dorm just yards from where the rumors began.

“Hearing him describe sirens and locked doors was terrifying,” she said. “You send your child to college and never expect a call like that.”

Chancellor Aswani Volety called it “a long and difficult day” for the university, saying even he sheltered in place with students and staff.
