OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - The Drug Enforcement Administration’s Omaha Field Division hosted its 4th annual Family Summit Friday, highlighting how fentanyl and other dangerous drugs are impacting tribal communities.

DEA Omaha Special Agent in Charge Dustin Gillespie opened the summit with a call to action.

“We need to take action now — it’s never been more urgent,” Gillespie said.

He noted that tribal nations are disproportionately affected by drugs compared to the rest of the country, and often face challenges as underserved communities.

According to the CDC, more than 75,000 Americans died from a drug overdose in the past year.

In Nebraska, about 151 deaths were tied to overdoses — averaging 13 every month.
