University of Akron coach Joe Moorhead pointed to college football’s obsession with the transfer portal after his team’s first victory of the 2025 season, a 51-7 nonconference win over Duquesne on Sept. 20 at InfoCision Stadium.

The Akron defense dominated, producing three takeaways, including an interception returned for a touchdown, and forcing two turnovers on downs. The Zips put on a complementary football clinic, with their offense scoring touchdowns off an interception, a fumble recovery and both of Duquesne’s failed fourth-down attempts.

Moorhead considers the blowout a sign the Zips (1-3) have started to find their footing while adjusting to the many personnel changes they experienced this past offseason.
