LOUISVILLE, Ky. —
Nearly 150 people gathered at Waterfront Park on Sunday for the Huntington’s Disease Society of America’s Team Hope Walk, uniting families, advocates and supporters to raise funds and awareness for a disease that touches generations. The HDSA estimates 41,000 Americans are currently symptomatic, with another 200,000 at risk.
Huntington’s disease is caused by an error in a single gene that damages the brain and is passed down through families. For many, the journey begins with uncertainty.
“For me, it was something that was very difficult, being young and not understanding. The other aspect of it was knowing I was at risk for a long time and not knowing if I would be positive for the gene,” said Courtney Bennett, Kentucky president of HDSA.
