STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Gov. Kathy Hochul is alerting New Yorkers to scams connected with the state’s inflation refund checks.

Eligible New Yorkers will automatically receive checks of up to $400 in the mail starting in October without going through an application process, Hochul said in a previous statement.

Hochul said that scammers are sending potential recipients text messages, voice messages, emails and direct mail containing falsehoods.

Some of the bogus requests appear to be from the state Department of Taxation and Finance seeking details about the bank accounts of recipients. The con artists might claim that banking information is required in order to deposit the money into the recipients’ accounts.
