Newark homeowners would pay an average $564 more in city property taxes this year under the proposed 2025 municipal budget, once the already delayed fiscal plan is finally OK’d.

The Newark City Council did not adopt the $970,180,790.27 budget as anticipated on Wednesday, as the administration is waiting on “additional instructions from the state,” according to City Clerk Kecia Daniels.

Nine months into the fiscal year and nearly six months past the deadline to adopt the fiscal plan, the council ultimately deferred the 2025 budget following a public hearing at its Wednesday, Oct. 1, meeting. The next council meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 15. It’s unclear whether a special hearing will be set before then.
