PHOENIX — The Kyrene School District announced a modification to the initial proposal that recommended potentially closing as many as nine schools .

The main reason? Declining enrollment. The district was built to serve 20,000 students, but now only has 12,000 enrolled.

According to the revised proposal presented during a recent board retreat, Kyrene del Norte and Kyrene de la Mirada would be removed from the list of school closures.

That drop in enrollment, along with concerns over funding, is telling.

12News spoke with two parents who have children who attend the two schools that appear to be saved from the potential closures, based on the revised plan.
