A Jetstar customer has claimed he was told he needed to pay a $60 fine or would be forced to miss his flight - despite pointing out a huge problem with the charge.

Sergey Kandaurov was travelling from the Sunshine Coast to Sydney last month with his wife when the couple were told they needed to pay an excess baggage fee at the airport.

The couple had purchased an additional weight allowance ahead of time and were travelling with four bags following their month-long trip.

Mr Kandaurov weighed all four bags before arriving at the airport with a hand-held scale to make sure they fitted within the new 70kg limit, but was told by staff at check-in that the luggage exceeded the limit by 4kg.
