A man was seriously hurt Monday when he was thrown from his boat by a breaking wave at the mouth of the Merrimack River, fire officials said.

The 37-year-old was wearing a life jacket when he was ejected from his boat, and although he was seriously hurt, still managed to get back onboard and ride into Newburyport Harbor.

The Newburyport Fire Department was called to help shortly after 5:30 p.m. Firefighters used the department's Raven's nest boat to bring the man to shore, where an ambulance rushed him to the hospital.

He is expected to recover.

First responders brought the man's boat back to shore as well.
