8-year-old boy accidentally shoots himself with father's gun, MPD says

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - An 8-year-old boy was injured after he accidentally shot himself early Tuesday morning in Frayser, police said.

Memphis Police (MPD) said officers were called just after 2 a.m. to a shooting on Hillside Avenue off Wellons Avenue and University Street and found a child had been shot.

Police said the child was taken to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital.

MPD said investigators learned that the child got a hold of the gun from his father's work backpack inside the home. And while playing with it, he accidentally shot himself, police said.

The boy was hospitalized in non-critical condition, police added.
