NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — An elementary school in Newport News was placed on lockdown on Tuesday while law enforcement dealt with a nearby "situation," the school division said.

McIntosh Elementary School, right near the intersection of Richneck Road and Jefferson Avenue, was placed on lockdown Tuesday "out of an abundance of caution," the school division said.

Newport News Police Department said the call came in at 2:15 p.m. about a potentially armed individual. However, after a thorough search of the area, including the wood line behind the school, officers did not locate anyone and do not believe there is a threat to the school or community.
