BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — U.S. Senator John Hoeven has confirmed the appointment of Kirsten Baesler as the new assistant secretary of education in the U.S. Department of Education.

Baesler was officially confirmed Tuesday as part of a Senate measure that grouped 108 civilian nominees into one vote. The Senate voted 51-46 on Friday to authorize a final confirmation vote on the executive appointees.

The assistant secretary oversees federal policy for the nation’s K-12 schools.

Baesler was nominated for the position back in February, while she was serving her fourth four-year term as state superintendent of public instruction in North Dakota.
