RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Troopers are investigating what led to a crash where a vehicle caught on fire early Wednesday morning in eastern Wake County.
An alert was sent out by the North Carolina Department of Transportation just before 3 a.m. that an accident occurred around 2:50 a.m. on U.S. 64/I-87 West at mile marker 432 near Lizard Lick Road. At around 5 a.m., one lane of the highway has reopened.
CBS 17 was at the scene where troopers were investigating a vehicle that was crashed into a woodline on the side of the highway and appeared to be destroyed by a fire. The car was wrapped around a tree and heavily damaged by the impact.
According to the alert, the crash is estimated to be cleared around 6 a.m. Wednesday.
