At a September event at New Hope Baptist Church in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Republican gubernatorial nominee Jack Ciattarelli fielded questions about immigration policy during a community forum hosted by Rev. Steffie Bartle, the church’s senior pastor and Northeast Regional Director of the National Action Network. When asked about Trump’s ongoing ICE raids and mass deportation plans, Ciattarelli praised Trump for “securing the border” and said he opposed New Jersey’s sanctuary city policies.

The GOP candidate also rejected birthright citizenship, claiming the 14th Amendment “was specific to the slaves who had just been freed,” not to children of undocumented immigrants. Birthright citizenship has been established by the Supreme Court's ruling of the Constitution.
